The Hutongs of Beijing: A Stroll Through the Past

Beijing is a fascinating city with so many exciting things to do and see, such as the Forbidden City and Great Wall. The Chinese capital is also a city that is rapidly Westernizing. It is still possible, however, to find glimpses of the old Beijing that fulfills most people's preconceived notions of China.

Just head over to the hutongs around the Drum Tower in the Gulou area. Hutongs, or narrow alleyways around traditional gray brick homes, are giving way to high rise apartment buildings and wide streets throughout the city. The Gulou area, however, is one the municipal government is trying to leave intact for tourists to experience.

Spend a morning, or better yet, a day, just wandering through the hutongs, which are bounded by Second Ring Road on the north and Guloudongdajie (East Gulou Street) on the south. Don’t worry about getting lost as you walk through the narrow lanes. If you walk far enough in any direction, you’ll soon come across a major street with buses and taxis to take you to your next destination.

Almost every home in the hutongs is marked with a wooden door painted red; some have Chinese New Year’s posters glued to them. Several families may live in apartments behind one red door. If the door is open, feel free to look inside to see bicycles and plants lining the walkways, but don’t step over the stoop without an invitation. That’s considered an invasion of privacy.

As you wander through the hutongs, you’ll come across small shops selling necessities of daily life and restaurants with only a few tables. These probably won’t have any menus in English; non-Chinese speakers can order by pointing to dishes other diners are having. The dishes served at these small eateries will be prepared traditional style and not sanitized for Western palates as meals in major hotel restaurants are.

Snack food junkies will want to hit the hutongs early in the morning, preferably no later than 7 a.m. That’s because some foods, such as youtiao, are served only in the morning. Youtiao is made by doubling a narrow length of bread dough, braiding it into a stick and then deep-frying it in a huge cast iron wok. Greasy, but absolutely delicious fresh out of the wok.

Mornings are also a good time to eat congee (bean porridge) and steamed bread. Add a few jiaozi (dumplings/pot stickers) and you have a typical Chinese breakfast.

Morning is a good time to visit the hutongs, especially in the summer. Most hutong homes don’t have toilets, with residents using a communal toilet down the street. These can get pretty smelly in the summer. Since these are public toilets, tourists with a need can use them, but they’ll need to have their own toilet paper.

The Drum Tower is the main tourist attraction in the area; the Bell Tower is behind it. Walk straight west from there, through some renovated hutongs, to the Soong Ching Ling House, located along Houhai Lake. Visitors who have fought the crowds at the Forbidden City will appreciate the feeling of peace and serenity her compound provides. Soong Ching Ling was the widow of Sun Yat-Sen and is known as the “mother of China.”

End your day in the hutongs by strolling south along the lakes, stopping at sidewalk cafes and coffee bars for refreshments, as you prepare to re-enter a modern Beijing.

Welcome The New Year in New York City

Time flies so fast indeed. It was just like yesterday when my family celebrated the Christmas and welcomed the New Year together. Yet again, we are nearing to the days of celebrating such joyous world celebration. Although I am nearing to becoming a year older by counting the days closing to the new year, I still can't help but anticipate the coming of the year 2013. I am anticipating on what the new year will bring. Will I be prosperous or will I stay in this current state - struggling? Will there be good things to happen in my life when the new year comes? I can only hope for all the good things.

Our last New Year was spent here in Manukan and surely, this coming New Year will be again spent here. As much as the whole family wanted to spend that holiday somewhere nice and luxurious, we cannot afford the expense. Besides, there is a belief that my folks believed in - spend new year at home together so the family will not spread out and be apart. Celebrating new year with the whole family is fun. I am truly contented with it but New Year and even Christmas is no longer fun in this little town unlike before. I miss the joyous atmosphere of Christmas in the Philippines that is felt as early as September.

Top Five Countries I Dream To Visit

I have not traveled much for I can't afford such luxury. Even going on Cheap holidays to Turkey are trips I couldn't afford. Even here in my own country, there were only few places that I have visited. I was just fortunate enough to have stepped on the crystal white sand of Boracay and sailed on the wide Honda Bay in Palawan. Still, there are more places that I longed to explore here in my country and hopefully I'll be able to do so before my age hinder me.

To travel abroad was and still my dream. It's everyone's dream I believe. If given the opportunity, I would enjoy and explore five countries that I've dreamed of visiting.

1. Thailand. 
The first in my list would be Thailand. I missed the opportunity given to me last 2006 to visit and explore the said place. Hopefully, before I retire, I would be able to enjoy a trip there even for a day or two. I've heard the beaches there are nice but I know fore sure there is a lot more to see and experience. I am curious about how friendly are the people there being known as the Land of Smiles. Also I'd love to experienced Thailand Cuisine to the extreme and to shop riding a paddled banca.

2. Italy.
The second country in my list is Italy to visit the Eternal City Rome. After I finished watching the complete seasons of the HBO series Rome, I wished I have lived during ancient times of Rome, during the times of the Caesars. I could be a Caesar's mistress wearing those noble women's clothing in the series; the long silk gowns with matching sparkling gold accessories and sporting a long, curly hair. Lol!  Seriously, I would love to see before my eyes the amazing architectures of Rome that I only see on books and on TV. I would love to visit all its ancient sites and experience this eternal city's history.

3. Jordan. 

The main reason why I like to visit Jordan is to learn more of Christian tradition. I would love to see the Jordan River where Jesus was baptized. Also, I would live to swim in the Dead Sea that is said to be the world's first health resorts. How true is it that the Dead Sea won't drown you and instead, due to its high salt content, you can effortlessly float on the water. That's what I hope to find out.

4. Spain.

I would love to rub elbows with my ancestors. Lol! The history buff in me wished to learn more of their history, language and culture. Spain, having once colonized our country majorly influenced our culture, language and religion. And even it happened decades ago, their cultures that my grand grand folks have adopted were passed down to me. Apart from that, there are nice places to visit and explore in Spain. I am curious of their Naturist or Nudist Beaches where you swim...well...nude. : )

5. United States of America.

Aside from the wish to experience the what they called "living the American dream"...(hopefully), if it can be done for a day or two, the first reason would be to meet my in laws there. And if given time and dime, I would explore the must-visited sights like the Grand Canyon, Time Square, Disneyland Park, Niagara Falls and Las Vegas Strip. I dream on!
