Maybe, in time when the history of first few decades of this century will be written in special context to the development of technology, the historians would write about the harms of competition side by side to the benefits of it. While competition no doubt brings down the prices and the quality innovation is fueled by the ongoing competition in the market, it has its negative aspects as well. Do imagine, for example, the dozens of ports, mobile phones come with these days.
It is OK that they want to make everything unique and try to woo the customers with what they describe and consider is best for them. But the innovations in case of mobile chargers and AC adaptors are no more original. In many cases, the companies would produce a battery with its unique design that fits only to the mobile phone of the same company and none else.
The Multiplicity
This negative aspect of the competition—is that, in fact, it doesn’t generate any innovation in the technology but makes the accessories for each and every device a separate entity that cannot go in conformity with any other device of the same genre but from a different company.
The issue gets more complex if the family members have to carry their separate laptop chargers just for the reason that one’s is not able to serve the device of the other. This adds to the heftiness of the baggage for any traveling plan. Further, if the charger of one device is not working, you cannot use the same of your brother’s or friend’s laptop, though it may be readily available. It would be available but wouldn’t be compatible at all. Ultimately useless!
Compatibility Factor
This compatibility factor was resolved long ago in case of companies making the electric outlets. Imagine a situation that you have an electric iron and you want to use it, but just then you come to know that the electric outlet you are going to plug in its lead is not compatible with the iron lead. You are surprisingly asked to get another electric outlet installed at your home, so that you can use the iron. You might laugh at such an imagination. But compare the same with the case of laptop chargers or for that matter the accessories that come with a number of latest gadgets like tablet, iPhone and so on. Many of such devices may need batteries and chargers of similar specifications, but each has its own special, typical one. At the end of the day, it creates multiplicity and the consequent troubles for people.
The Initiative
A few companies have started taking an initiative in the direction which may rectify this mess. They have developed several kinds of versatile accessories and you are relieved from taking a number of chargers with you when you go on a tour with your family or on a business trip with your colleagues. You have only to buy universal AC adaptor in case of laptops.
